The perfect weekend

Have you ever felt so contented and so joyful that if you "went" right now, you'd go blissfully happy? For me, this was the perfect weekend; full of family, wonderful friends, fun, laughter and the promise of more joy to come.

These are the sweetest friends in the world, Vicki, Rachel, Carol, Pam and Lauren. Lauren was given the most elegant shower I have ever attended thanks to them. Love you!!!!

Lauren and Skyler came home to Cali for the weekend! I felt bad for the poor guy as he was the center of attention and curiosity. So many names to learn, a skeptical new brother in law to be, relationships to get straight, an inquisition from our friends AND an interview with the Bishop.

These are Lauren's life long friends, most of them have known each other since kindergarten and have been the best of friends. These girls truly love each other. It was so wonderful to see them all together again!!!

Brothers to be...whew! This went well!

I will blog more about this wonderful weekend later, right now I am just grateful for wonderful, loving friends who are always there with us.

A little PPI with Bishop Tom. Just so you know Skyler, you won him over. You won us all over....We love you and welcome you to our "family!!"

Skyler's youngest admirers! The flower girls, Madison and Payton. You won them over too, it's okay to share their Lolo with you.

Family and friends and gifts were just fine, but the real highlight of Skyler's trip?
In -n- Out, a California tradition. He REALLY liked the burgers, 3 trips in 4 days.
And he got a T-shirt to prove it.

Your opinion please

Recently in my life, I have had a tiny bit of controversy and it is wedding related.
I would most sincerely value your opinion on a subject that I did not know was so extremely polarizing, but every time I discuss it with anyone, you would think that it is a matter of national security like an election. It's not.

Is it perfectly tacky or perfectly socially acceptable to include enclosures in wedding invitations that say: "Bride & Groom are registered at This Place."? What are your thoughts? Are you offended, do you think it is awful? OR Do you not give it a second thought because every one seems to be doing it?

Seriously, what do you think? What would you do if you were the MOB and in charge of sending out the invites?

ALSO....Last call for advice and/or recipes for Lauren's Blogging Shower. I have gotten quite a few but there are a some amazing women out there that I have not heard from....you know who you are! Thank you to everyone who has participated, what fun all this is!!

Accessorize Me!!

Do you watch "What not to Wear?" I do! Love it.

I would love, love, love to go on the show, but unfortunately, I don't dress quite bad enough. I've thought about faking it and having someone nominate me, but I don't think I could pull off hippie dressing or sweats and tube tops for two or three weeks.

Since I am SUCH a fan of the show, I know one thing...it is so important to accessorize. Just the right earrings or necklace or shoes will make an outfit POP!

I have my own personal theory about accessories. Want to hear it? (of course you do!!) Earrings and shoes (and purses Paige) are the great fashion equalizers. It doesn't matter how chubby or skinny you are, you can have great earrings, shoes or purses. Because of my belief, I spend way too much money on the aforesaid items.

In my regular wardrobe I have great deal of white and black. I only wear black because they haven't developed a darker color yet. Black is a wonderful disguiser of my multitude of body flaws.

Today I got a new accessory in black.

Because of this....

Just adds to the on-going saga of my life.
You, too, can get this at your local Kaiser Emergency room!

I am getting sick of Lemonade.

(A disclaimer...our pool isn't usually this dirty, it has been stinkin' windy here!!!)

A trip down memory lane

Come with me on a trip down memory lane. Let's go back to June 9, 1982. I was deliriously happy, engaged to the love of my life and planning a wedding that was to take place one month and one day later.

I was living at home while preparing for the big day. We lived on 26 acres outside of Modesto. My mom was a Pioneer Woman. Our ranch had trees of every kind, peaches, oranges, apricots, apples, lemons, grapefruits and cherries. My dad grew almonds and we spent most of our summers out in the field hoeing and doing all kinds of chores. (Most always in a bathing suit and shorts with Sun-in on our hair, multi-tasking...tanning and working.)

Mom and Dad and my sister Rose had gone to a family reunion in Soap Lake, Washington. I stayed behind because I couldn't leave my sweetheart. So, I had a list of things to do while they were gone. My mom was BIG into leaving work for us. Idle hands are the tools of the devil you know! My assigned tasks for the day were to go to town and mail my invitations and pick cherries and bottle them. Mom had said that I could have half of whatever I canned that summer to take with us when we went off to LA and Dental School. I loved home canned fruits so I was more than willing.

I got back from the post office about 10:00. I changed into the grunkiest outfit I owned. Cherries stain and I didn't want to ruin something cute. I also didn't put on a bathing suit because I didn't want to get all scratched up. About 10:30 I went to the barn, got the 18 foot cherry ladder and my transistor radio was set to KFRC, I was ready to pick. Dad had irrigated before he left and the ground was still kind of soft and mushy, so I went barefoot. I checked out the trees and put the ladder up and started picking. Up and down that ladder I went, picking and dumping. I had been picking for about an hour. I was serious about getting tons of cherries.

(this is not the ladder, mine was much, much taller...)

I put the ladder against one of the bigger trees, it had lucious dark red cherries at the the top. So I climbed to the top of the ladder. You know the step that is clearly labeled not to step above it? I did. I was reaching for a bunch of cherries when the ladder shifted, the branch broke and down I went.

There I was passed out in the orchard, no one home, out 6 miles from town, before cell phones, by myself. I woke up very acutely aware of the massive pain in my back. My legs were numb, I was covered with sticks and mud. As I tried to stand, I couldn't. I really couldn't even get up on my hands and knees. I had a major problem. I couldn't lay here forever and hope someone would find me, the orchard sat down below the canal bank and I couldn't be seen from the road. Byron was at work in Pleasanton, over an hour away and he wasn't coming until Thursday, this was a Monday. Mom and Dad were in Washington....I was in a pickle as my Mom would say.

So after a while I decided I needed to get to the house. Somehow I had to get up the canal bank, down the road, through the barnyard and up the stairs to the house. Without being able to stand and in a lot of pain. I started to GI crawl. The distance was only a few hundred yards, but it might as well have been a marathon I was crawling. There were ants I crawled through, dirt, sticks, gravel...it was pretty gnarly!! When I finally got to the stairs, they looked so unsurmountable, all two of them. Somehow I got up them and crawled into the house, through the family room, the kitchen and to the phone. I pulled it down on myself and called my sister Robyn, who had 4 small children and was 8 months pregnant. "Roby, help me" I managed to squeak out and then passed out again. She didn't know who it was, no caller id in 1982. She gathered up the kids, said a prayer for inspiration where to go and started to drive. She says the car steered itself and all of a sudden she knew. She got out to our parents and found me in the hallway, muddy, cut up, covered with all kinds of stuff and she totally freaked out! Robyn is a nurse so she doesn't scare easily, but I looked really bad. An ambulance came, Byron was called and I went to the hospital.

I spent a week there, imagine my poor parents coming home to the news! They had no idea until they got home and there was a note on the table from Robyn. "Jeni has had an accident and is in the hospital, call me. Love, Roby."

Bottom line? I broke my back. One month before my wedding, I broke my back. After spending the week in the hospital, we all agreed I would go to stay with my future-in-laws for a bit so I could be with Byron. My wedding dress that I had bought wasn't going to work over the lovely back brace I was now the proud owner of, so a new one needed to be made. Isn't this sexy? I wore one just like this until three days before my wedding. Then I was switched to this item of torture. Only mine went lower on the bottom and higher on the top. I'm short. It had an assortment of buckles and snaps that were just a joy.

(Byron just looked at this picture, it brought back such fond memories..... My kids are all so impressed.)

Yes, I got married with this contraption. I was so blessed not to have been more seriously injured or paralyzed, we didn't care! The obvious question....honeymoon. I'll just say this...when there's a will, there's a way.

Needless to say I don't do any cherry picking or anything that involves height or a ladder!

They're movin' on up......

A week of emotional changes at our house. After 19 solid years with a child in elementary school, we are done. The tears flowed as Scotty had his final honor roll assembly and I looked over this group of 5th graders that are truly the best of Brentwood. Some friends that he has had since Pre-School will be going to a different Junior High, this makes me sad. But they will be reunited in three years in Seminary!

So this is Scotty. He is ripe for the picking for the show "What not to Wear..." Do they have 11 year olds on the show? Because if they do...

Here Scotty is getting his Academic Achievement award from his Principal, Mrs. Olson (our friend MO). Scotty thinks he is hot stuff at school because she was present at his birth and that makes him special.

Check out this outfit. Where was his mother when he left for school?
Good Grief.
Scotty, Me & Margo. Celia Fae took the picture and said it was at a good angle. I am going to meet her in an alley and explain to her that it WAS NOT a good angle.
(How do those little ankles hold everything up? I am very impressed by my ankles.)
Jeffrey was promoted from 8th grade! Notice how at our school we keep the animals behind cages.
This is Jeff getting his diploma from our friend Tobi who is on the school board. Our former Bishop was giving the diplomas on the other side. See the teacher in glasses and the one to the left who is clapping madly and grinning gleefully? They truly ARE clapping for Jeff. He drove them crazy with his "socialness". (that's teacherspeak for 'talking all the time...') Jeff also had perfect attendance all three years of middleschool and has only missed one day of school ever. Impressive. I wish we could say the same about his homework record. Not so impressive.
Here he is...Jeffrey Aaron Groseclose, Liberty High School class of 2012.
Congratulations Scotty and Jeff!

You are cordially invited...

Dear Blogger friends,
What an amazing group of women you are! I read your posts and comments and marvel at the wisdom, creativity, humor and talent of all of you. I would like to invite you/beg you to share some of those wonderful attributes with my daughter Lauren. I thought of a "blogging shower" , the good thing is that you don't have to get dressed and go anywhere, no money or gifts involved, just a bit of your time. She reads your blogs and comments to me all the time about how cool you all are. She is having a "real" shower next week, I would love, love, love it if you would send a bit of advise, your favorite recipe, whatever...to my email. I will steal a picture from your blog, paste it on and print them all up and put them in a cute little book to give to her at her shower.
I hope I am not too annoying, I'm a proud Mom. If you knew the path we have taken to get her here, you would understand. If you lurk....make this be the time you comment!! (That means you Margaret and Donna!!!) Please send to my email, Jeni Groseclose at bjgrose@sbcglobal.net
(Please don't break my heart by sending me a negative comment, I'm tenderhearted.)
Thank you so much, let's start a little tradition!
Lovingly and thankfully yours,

Jeni

The Eighth Grade Dance

The eighth grade dance, long awaited and long anticipated didn't disappoint.
We did have a little snafu earlier in the day when we went to get a haircut and it didn't quite turn out as planned. A little on the short side shall we say? There were tears, many tears and an "I hate you Mom". All in a days work.

So let me take you on a photo journey and show you why my son will start high school in August with duct tape over his eyes and a seeing eye dog to get him around

.

Yes ma'm this is an 8th grade girl. He certainly looks happy doesn't he? I guess the hormones work.

More girls letting their "girls" get some air.

Could he look goofier? I am pretty sure I saw him hug the girl in the purple when I picked him up. Her name is Edith. Yep. Edith.

This girl won "Class Clown" with Jeff, they are partners in laughter. Please let it not be permanent.

They let her out of the house. Unfortunately this was before Jeff broke his glasses, which will never be repaired for fear he could actually see these girls.

Cute girl, not much in the cart in the way of groceries. Good thing, he's taller and that would be all bad.

The girl in the middle is the lovely Kaitlyn, who I mistakenly keep calling Sarah. Sarah was her part in the play. I am relieved to see an age-appropriate dress and one that shows nothing when she bends over. I don't know when he had time to "stand around" with her since there are about 20 more pictures with lovely young ladies. Any guys at this dance Jeff?

Wednesday is the 8th Grade Promotion and then....Liberty High School....watch out, the charming and funny "Mr. Blue Eyes" is coming! Heaven help me.
