When my bloggy friend Christie got a haircut she hated, we were there for her. Encouraging her, denouncing her horrid, misguided hairdresser and generally being THERE for her.
Today I got a new do. I went dark and with chunky highlights. My new hairdresser (Stacy the miracle worker moved...dang her) wanted to sit and chat about my hair for 30 minutes. I honestly didn't know there was SO much to talk about. I told her I was game for anything that didn't require spiking or hot rollers or a perm. I wanted it simple.
SO she spun me around so I couldn't see, she colored, she cut, she used the blow dryer.
Then...my world was put into a spin.
Totally changed.
I thought getting a new, well fitting bra was life altering.
But it was nothing compared to what Kristine, my new best friend told me.
How could I live almost, (only 96 short days....) 50 years and NEVER know this?
Here's how it went down...:
"Okay! All done! I'm going to wheel you around (like on What not to Wear) and you'll see the new you!"
"OH! I love the color, it's awesome. And you tucked my hair, I LOVE TUCKING!! It's so cute!"
"Well, the good thing is that this cut is going to look just as good on the SECOND or THIRD day, it's a great dirty hair haircut..."
WHAT?!?!?!?!?
A great dirty hair haircut? Why in the world would I want THAT?
"Wh-wha-what?"
She looks horrified........"do you....wash your hair EVERY day?!?!"
"Well, of course I do, don't you?"
So we spent another 20 minutes discussing how NOT washing your hair is what EVERY woman does (I wonder what that makes me?), how your color lasts longer, your hair is healthier etc...
I feel like a total failure as a woman, a citizen of the global world.
A total environmental criminal as I think of all the water I have wasted and soapy shampoo I have let run to the sea.
A total financial failure as I think of the money I have wasted buying twice as much shampoo and product as I needed to.
But, more importantly,
a total failure as a mother as I have trained and the set the example of clean hair to my children, when obviously second day hair is truly the ideal.
How did I NOT KNOW?
My question, do you wash your hair every day? How long do you go if not?
Do you think less of me?
But isn't the color awesome?
And if you go to Christie's blog and look at her much hated haircut, mine looks a lot like it. One woman's junk is another woman's treasure.

I LOVE it! The cut and color are absolutely fabulous.
I wash my hair every day (remember, I'm a hairdresser) I know, the horror of NOT going two or more days. It all depends on you and your hair. Mine is useless the second day. For some people, it really works.
Did I mention I LOVE your new do?!?!?
LOVE IT! love the color.. love it! I have only colored my hair one time- like 6 years ago!. you make me want me to do it again.. so super cute!
I wash my hair every other day.. and sometimes I can get away with an extra day in between.. I usually like it better the second day.. and if it looks greasy at all you can put some baby powder in and that soaks it up.. that sounds gross. but you know what I mean right?
you look fabulous!
It is so cute!! I love it!! And yeah, washing everyday is totally unhealthy for your hair. I go about 3-4 days.
I'm so loving the color!!
As I age and my colored hair loses body and thins, I wash less and less. It looks best abt. day 3, I know, I know..eeeuw! But that's what it's come to! You have to sacrifice for beauty!!
Ok, hair aside (which I love), HELLO WEIGHT LOSS!!! I went back in your archives, and you can TOTALLY tell the products of your hard work. Good for you, Jeni!
Oh, and I've tried to do the not washing my hair every day. Doesn't work so much.
I've seen a lot of stuff on the boards about the 'no poo' rage.. where people stop washing their hair ... something about everytime you wash your hair you are stripping the natural oils and so your scalp thinks you need more... so I guess this women who stopped washing their hair, it took about 6 weeks to 'train' their oil glands (so 6 WEEKS of greasy gross hair) and then their hair stopped being greasy and become healthier, non-greasy etc. There's no way I could stand greasy hair for 6 weeks. ick. Your hair looks fab!
Love the cut and color! You are darling. I am an every other day girl but have gone 1-2 days past that too but my head gets itchy and I feel gross if I go that long. I really think it all depends on how much product you use. I use minimal product so my hair doesn't get greasy for a few days. Lucky me!
Here's my trick since I can't STAND not to wash my hair everyday. I know I shouldn't, but when I don't it looks like crap and I feel dirty.
EVERY OTHER DAY RINSE YOUR HAIR AND APPLY CONDITIONER (NO SHAMPOO). I have very thin, fine hair and it never looks "dirty" when I do this. Give it a try if you can't go "all the way" like me!
You look marvelous!
Your color is fabulous. I'm loving the dark underneath. So dimensional.
I wash every other day. I started this just in the last few years. My hair is dry and lifeless if I wash every day. Second day hair is my favorite but only the first half of the day. By late afternoon evening it starts to look and feel kinda yuck. It is all part of the menopause factor. Plus people who workout need to wash more often but that isn't me.
You look young and hip girl friend.
It looks cute!
I wash every other day unless I sweat really bad in my workout. It never is better for me the second day. It's always a ponytail day.
Uh, I had no idea of the global and environmental implications of washing my hair daily. I feel reckless. (Truth be known I don't wash it every day...it just depends on how long it is. When it was shorter I washed every day.)
It looks SO FABULOUS. And your blogging makes me laugh, you funny girl, you.
actually, i was the one who told christie i preferred her hair longer. because i'm a shoddy friend that way.
although i will say that i absolutely love this cut on you. i would go so far as to call this perfect hair.
the most important regret you should have about washing every day is to think about all the days you've wasted waking up a little early to wash, when you could've slept in an additional 20 minutes. even my husband has my "no-hair-washing-days" schedule down, and knows to hit snooze twice every MWF.
I love it! You look great, happy, fit and not even close to 50 dahling.
I like it a lot. You are young and trendy! I am a second day girl and if my husband is traveling and I am not PMSy I will even do 3rd day hair. second day hair is so fast and cute. Really cute.
But I shower every day. No second day bodies for me.
I can't see the picture. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACk! I want to see it. I bet it is so cute and I'm thrilled for you that you get to tuck again.
I'm CUTTING mine today and can't wait. See ya long hair. I hate you.
It really depends on my cut. If it's long, I can go 4 or 5 days between washes, but when it's shorter, I do every other day. BUT I use a dry shampoo in between so technically my hair is clean. Just not wet.
I wash my hair almost every day that I work out and on Sundays. So that leaves Saturday when I can do that second day hair thing (if I am really good at doing my work out).
I can't have second day hair after sweating like a pig during my cardio session. I rather spend more on shampoo than be a social outcast with stinky hair.
Your hair is darling! Very good stylist.
hat is adorable! You look great! I also liked your former style too! Send me a good stylist!
My hair style is the dirty hair. It looks, lays better and it takes literally 5 minutes to do, it's awesome!!! So remember if you hav a big event let's say on Saturday, wash your hair on Thursday. Very cute and sassy!
Um, no, no, no. Yours is NOTHING like the hideous mess that was my hair. Yours is fabulous! I love it! Even cuter from the back. You done good, kid.
Oh, and I REFUSE to not wash my hair everyday. Everyone says that, but I can't stand it the second day. And I get so sweaty when I work out - BLECH. Everyday shampoo for this girl.
LOOOVE it!
I wash my hair every other day. It is hard- but I have noticed a difference in my hair. It took me a good month to get used to it.
Your hair looks GREAT! Very cool. Love the cut and the color. :)
I wash my hair everyday. I think the frequency of washing your hair depends on your hair. Mine is icky oily/greasy if I don't wash it everyday. lol! But my sister (whose hair is thicker and drier than mine) doesn't wash hers everyday. I think it's individual. ;)
BTW, I love reading your blog! :)
I loved reaading the comments on this one. I totally wash everyday and it looks like we aren't minority I thought we were...
LOVE the cut and color! And I'm an every other day kinda gal. Except for when the "every" falls on a Thursday. I absolutely have to shampoo after I teach my class at the gym on Thursdays cause I sweat way too much.
its cute!! i really like it, in 2 weeks i can FINALLY get my hair done and i am SO excited!!
I love the new cut! I completely go for the 2nd day hair, and since Eva was born, even that is frequent for me. Just finding time for a shower is hard, let alone time to do my hair too. :)
Adorable. I love it!
As for whether I wash everyday...don't ask. If I have water, I shower. If not, I mix in with the common folk. I love my own stank.
Adorable. But, you can pull off anything. My hair looks better and is more manageable the second day without a wash!
It's very very cute and classy.
I shower every other day like clockwork.
I like your hair. My is a disgusting, drippy mess if I don't wash every day. Same with my sisters. We try and deny it but it's true.
Beautiful! I like it the new cut and color... of course.
I wash every other day, but just in the last 2 years. EVERYTIME I went to get my hair done, the hair dresser would say... "you wash your hair everyday, don't you? You need to stop, its killing your hair." After years and years of those comments, I finally gave it a try. At first I hated it! I felt I looked greasy and my hair was unmanagable. But after a month or so, I started to love it! I much prefer my hair day 2. While I use to have greasy greasy hair, the more babies I have, the more dry and rough my hair gets.
But some people really can't pull it off. My mom, for instance, needs to wash her hair everyday.
i like the new hair do! i have to wash my hair everyday...especially when i wear it curly.
I REALLY like you hair!
I wash my hair EVERY day! It's gets all clumpy and sticks to my head if I don't. I don't know if I'm brave enough to go 6 WEEKS to wait for the oil faucets turn off.
I'm diggin the new do! I wash my hair every single day-if I don't I look like a greasy homeless person. I'm sure greasy homeless people are very nice, I just don't want to look like one. The cut is seriously cute and its cute on Christie too-she's crazy!
I know that we're not supposed to wash our hair every day, but I do. I have to.
